French Pet Passport: Bringing Your Pet to France in 2025
A 2025 guide for UK and international expats relocating to France with pets
Thinking of relocating to France with your furry friend? Whether you’re moving permanently, staying long-term, or simply travelling with your pet, understanding the French pet passport process is essential.
In this guide, we break down how to get your pet ready for travel to France — from vaccinations to customs paperwork — with tips for a smooth entry into the EU in 2025.

Do Pets Need a Passport to Enter France?
Yes. Any dog, cat, or ferret travelling to France from outside the EU (including the UK) must meet French and EU import requirements — which includes a valid pet passport or equivalent travel documents.
Since Brexit, UK-issued EU pet passports are no longer valid for travel to EU countries. Instead, British pet owners now need an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued by a licensed vet within 10 days of travel.
Still need to sort your own personal documentation? We have a detailed guide on french visa options.
Requirements for a Pet Passport (or Equivalent Entry Docs)
Whether you’re coming from the UK, US, or another non-EU country, your pet must meet the following criteria:
- ✅ Microchipped (ISO-compliant)
- ✅ Up-to-date rabies vaccination (at least 21 days before travel)
- ✅ Health certificate issued by an official vet
- ✅ Tapeworm treatment (dogs only – required for return to the UK)
- ✅ Entry through an approved travellers’ point of entry in France
If you’re travelling from within the EU, a valid EU Pet Passport may still be accepted.
The Animal Health Certificate (UK Pet Owners Only)
UK residents must now obtain an AHC every time they travel with their pet to the EU. This document:
- Must be issued within 10 days of entering France
- Is valid for 4 months of travel within the EU
- Costs around £100–£200 depending on the vet
You’ll need to show this certificate at customs upon arrival.
How Long Does It Take to Prepare?
We recommend starting the process at least one month before travel. Here’s a sample timeline:
Task | Timeframe |
---|---|
Microchipping & rabies vaccination | 30+ days before |
Vet appointment for AHC | 7–10 days before |
Tapeworm treatment (if returning to UK) | 1–5 days before return |

Travelling With Pets by Ferry, Car, or Plane
Most expats bring pets to France via:
- Car + Eurotunnel or Ferry: Easy and common from the UK
- Plane: Accepted by many airlines (in cabin or cargo)
- Pet courier services: Ideal if moving large dogs or multiple animals
Airlines and ferry companies will check documentation — make sure your AHC or passport is valid on the date of travel.
Can I Get a French Pet Passport After Arriving?
Yes — once you’re living in France, a local vet can issue an EU Pet Passport if:
- Your pet meets the vaccination and ID requirements
- You provide proof of residency in France
- You’ve already completed entry with a valid health certificate
This will allow easier travel within the EU going forward.
